After the Recent Announcement: Will Medicare Part D Premiums Increase in 2027? What Medicare Beneficiaries Need to Know

If you've recently heard news about changes to Medicare Part D, you may be wondering what it means for your prescription drug coverage and whether your costs will increase in the future.

The recent announcement has generated many questions, but there's no need to panic. Here's what we know so far and what Medicare beneficiaries should expect.

What Was Announced?

The federal government recently announced that the temporary Medicare Part D Premium Stabilization Demonstration Program will end after the 2026 plan year.

This program was created to help keep Medicare Part D premiums more stable while Medicare implemented major prescription drug changes, including the annual out-of-pocket spending cap.

With this temporary financial support ending, some Medicare Part D plans may adjust their premiums beginning in 2027.

Does This Affect My 2026 Medicare Plan?

No.

If you are enrolling in or already have a Medicare plan for 2026, your current benefits are not changing because of this announcement.

Your 2026 plan benefits, deductibles, copayments, and the annual prescription drug out-of-pocket limit remain the same.

What Could Change in 2027?

Because insurance companies will no longer receive this temporary premium stabilization funding, some stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plans may increase their monthly premiums in 2027.

The exact amount, however, will vary by:

  • Your Medicare Part D plan

  • Your insurance company

  • Your state

  • The medications you take

Not every plan is expected to increase by the same amount, and some plans may experience little or no increase.

The Good News

Although premiums may change in 2027, several important Medicare prescription drug protections remain in place.

These include:

  • The annual Medicare Part D out-of-pocket spending limit.

  • The Medicare Prescription Payment Plan, which allows eligible beneficiaries to spread prescription drug costs into manageable monthly payments instead of paying large amounts at the pharmacy.

  • Continued access to covered insulin and recommended vaccines under current Medicare rules.

These protections continue to provide important financial assistance for many people who take expensive prescription medications.

What Should Medicare Beneficiaries Do?

The most important thing you can do is stay informed and carefully review your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) when you receive it from your Medicare plan in September.

This document explains any changes to your plan that will take effect on January 1, 2027, including updates to premiums, deductibles, copayments, provider networks, prescription drug coverage, and other benefits.

After reviewing your ANOC, take advantage of the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During this time, insurance companies release their new plan premiums, benefits, formularies (covered drug lists), and provider networks for the upcoming year. This is your opportunity to compare your current plan with other available options and determine whether it still meets your healthcare needs and budget.

Because Medicare plans can change from year to year, a plan that worked well this year may not necessarily be the best option for next year. Reviewing your coverage annually can help ensure you're getting the benefits that best fit your doctors, medications, and financial situation.

Should You Be Concerned?

Not necessarily.

Medicare changes every year, and premium adjustments are a normal part of the program. The important thing is to review your options before renewing your coverage.

Many beneficiaries are able to find plans that continue to meet their needs and budget, even when premiums or benefits change.
